Frequently Asked Questions About Parallel Extruder

Why is a parallel twin screw extruder preferred over a single screw extruder for PVC pipe?
Parallel twin screw extruder offer better mixing, uniform melting, and lower shear heating, which is critical for heat-sensitive PVC. They prevent material degradation and ensure consistent pipe wall thickness and surface quality.
Maintain precise temperature control (zoned heating along the barrel), avoid excessive screw speeds, and ensure proper venting to remove moisture and decomposition gases. Also, use corrosion-resistant screw/barrel materials (e.g., nitrided steel or bimetallic lining) since PVC releases HCl.
Most PVC pipe lines use counter-rotating parallel twin screw extruder because they provide positive conveying, lower shear, and better pressure stability for thick-walled pipes. Co-rotating types are less common for pipe but may be used for special profiles or highly filled compounds.
Regular checks of screw and barrel wear (especially in the compression zone), cleaning of vent ports, inspection of heating/cooling zones, and lubrication of gearboxes. PVC compounds with calcium carbonate can be abrasive, so screw segments may need replacement every 6–12 months under heavy use.
A complete line includes: extruder → pipe die head → sizing sleeve → vacuum calibration tank → spray cooling tank → haul-off unit → pipe cutter → belling machine (for socketed pipes). Close integration with the extruder’s screw speed and pressure sensors is essential for uniform pipe dimensions.
